The French champions Lille have secured their place in the UEFA Champions League playoffs after defeating Marseille 2-1 in a playoff match at Stade de France on Wednesday night.
The victory was a significant one for Lille, who had to come from behind to beat the league leaders. The game started with Marseille taking control and creating chances throughout the first half, but Lille held firm and eventually found the equalizer through a goal from Maxence Lacroix in the second half.
In the final stages of the match, Lille were able to hold onto their lead and secure the win, thanks to another goal from Lacroix in the dying minutes of the match. The victory means that Lille will face either Inter Milan or AC Milan in the next round of the playoffs.
"This is a fantastic result," said Lille coach Christophe Galtier. "We knew it would be tough against Marseille, but we showed our quality and determination."
For Marseille, the defeat is a blow as they will now need to find a way to bounce back if they want to progress further in the competition.
"Today's performance was not up to scratch," said Marseille manager Rudi Garcia. "We gave everything we had, but unfortunately we couldn't get the result we wanted."
Despite the disappointment, Garcia remains optimistic about his team's chances of making it out of the group stage.
"We'll take this experience forward and work hard to improve," he said. "We're disappointed, but we know there's still a lot of football left to play."
